MDC’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Offers Free Help to Low-Income Residents

Miami Dade College (MDC) is continuing its long-standing commitment to help low-income, elderly, and non-English speaking residents complete their 2009 taxes with the “always free” Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). The VITA program is administered and staffed by faculty and MDC business students who volunteer their time to help the public in preparing their tax forms. Students are trained beforehand and must pass an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) exam of basic rules, regulations, and tax preparation skills before they assist taxpayers. Divided into three groups, their functions are administrative, tax return preparation, and quality review.

New Music Faculty and Musical Wunderkind to Perform with MDC’s Wind Symphony at Debut Concert March 13

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) music department at Kendall Campus is brimming with talent these days. Recently, Miami native and music wunderkind Brian Neal joined the college as director of instrumental studies, professor of trumpet instruction, and conductor of the campus’ Wind Symphony. Neal and his Wind Symphony student musicians will perform at a free concert on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at the McCarthy Auditorium on the Kendall Campus. In addition to the Wind Symphony, Neal will be a featured soloist at the event along with MDC music department chairperson, Rodester Brandon.

Acclaimed Bahamian Filmmaker Kareem Mortimer’s Narrative Feature will Debut at the 27th Annual Miami International Film Festival

Critically acclaimed Bahamian filmmaker Kareem Mortimer will present his narrative feature, Children of God, at the 27th Annual Miami International Film Festival on March 13-14, 2010 at Regal South Beach Cinemas and the Tower Theatre in Little Havana. It is the first Bahamian film to be presented in the history of the Miami International Film Festival.

Miami Dade College’s Arts and Philosophy Department at Wolfson Campus continues its successful series of afternoon jazz concerts, Jazz at Wolfson Presents, with a performance by jazz vocalist and pianist Kate Reid on Wednesday, Mar. 17.

MDC Medical Center Campus to Host Book Presentation and Reception for Dental Community

To bring together dental professionals in South Florida, including dentists and graduates of Miami Dade College’s Dental Hygiene Program, the college’s Medical Center Campus will host a reception on Thursday, Mar. 18, at 6 p.m. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

MDC to Host Census Meeting for Faith-Based Leaders March 19 at North Campus

Since last fall, Miami Dade College (MDC) has been actively involved in the public awareness efforts for the 2010 Census by spreading the word, posting important information on its website, sending emails to faculty, staff and students, and training its students for the Census speakers’ bureau, among other activities. Now, MDC will join Miami-Dade County and U.S. Census officials to host an important meeting of faith-based leaders on Friday, March 19, 2010, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., at its newly opened North Campus Science Complex.

MDC Cultura Del Lobo Presents Chinese Choreographer Yin Mei’s City of Paper March 19-20

Known for her visually stimulating choreography in dance theater, Chinese artist Yin Mei will present her latest production, City of Paper, during Miami Dade College’s (MDC) popular Cultura Del Lobo performance series on Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Byron Carlyle Theater in Miami Beach.

Miami Dade College Presents Contemporary Classical Music

The Arts and Philosophy department at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus presents an oddball ensemble: tenor saxophone, marimba (and wood block), electric guitar, and piano. The concert, titled Obsession!, will include a performance of Louis Andriessen’s mind-bending piece Hout (Wood), among other compositions, starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 28, at the First United Methodist Church of Miami.
