MDC Homestead Campus President will be Honored at the 22nd Annual 'In the Company of Women 2010 Awards Ceremony'
Miami Dade College (MDC) Homestead Campus president Dr. Jeanne F. Jacobs has been selected to receive the Outstanding Woman in Education and Research award from Miami-Dade County. Dr. Jacobs will receive her award at the 22nd Annual In the Company of Women 2010 Awards Ceremony, to be held on March 18, 2010, at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. The award spotlights the accomplishments of an outstanding professional female leader in the community in Education and Research.

MDC Receives National Recognition for Community Service; Named to President’s Honor Roll
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) long-standing commitment to service and civic engagement has once again received national attention. This time, MDC has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. It is also a past recipient of this honor. The Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized MDC and others for their positive impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice.

MDC President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón Selected to Participate in High Level U.S. Delegation to India
Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, president of Miami Dade College, has been selected to participate in a delegation of U.S. higher education leaders to India led by Dr. Allan E. Goodman, president and CEO of the Institute of International Education (IIE), and U.S. Under Secretary of Education Dr. Martha Kanter to promote U.S. higher education and to enhance and expand linkages with institutions in India. The weeklong visit will take place from February 28 to March 6.

The Board of Directors of the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) headquartered in New York has tapped Miami Dade College (MDC) president, Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón to become a member. He joins national leaders and thinkers on the Council’s membership roster including Katie Couric, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Diane Sawyer, David Gergen, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Strobe Talbott and others. CFR's membership ranks include top government officials, renowned scholars, business leaders, acclaimed journalists, prominent attorneys, and a host of distinguished nonprofit professionals. Miami: City of Refuge and the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College Welcome Writer-in-residence from Zimbabwe
The Florida Center for the Literary Arts at MDC, which has dynamic year-round programming - including the Book Fair, is proud to welcome Mr. Chenjerai Hove, of Zimbabwe, as Miami: City of Refuge writer-in-residence to the community. Study Abroad Program Will Take MDC Students Across Western Europe
From Argentina to Japan and beyond, Miami Dade College students are encouraged to see the world as they learn. This summer, the college’s School of Architecture will be offering a European study abroad program with a focus on architecture and interior design. Nation’s Premier Leadership Organization for Latinas Selects Miami Dade College’s Sylvia Orozco to Participate in its Award-Winning Program
The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) selected Sylvia Orozco, professor at Miami Dade College, to participate in its prestigious 2010 Executive Leadership Program. The Class of 2010 will kick-off in San Juan Bautista, Calif. on February 22. Only one other person was selected from Florida.

Miami Dade College Student Wins Top Service Award in the State
For the third consecutive year, a Miami Dade College student has won Florida Campus Compact’s top service award. In fact, Stephanie Del Pino, from MDC’s Kendall Campus Honors College, is the only student to receive a 2009 Excellence in Service Award in the Community/State College category and who will also receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award this year.

Longtime MDC Baseball Coach Set to Retire After 26 Seasons
Miami Dade College (MDC) baseball coach Steve Hertz has been carrying the torch for MDC’s storied baseball program for 26 years. He has continued the rich tradition of baseball excellence that was started in 1961 with legendary MDC coaches Demie Mainieri and Charlie Greene. In June 2010, Hertz will retire and pass the torch to his successor.

Miami Dade College North Campus Opens State-of-the-art Science Complex and Research Center
A recent Miami Dade College Board of Trustees meeting ended with a bang as hundreds gathered to celebrate the official opening of the college’s new, state-of-the-art Science Complex located at the North Campus, the first of its kind in north Miami-Dade County and a facility that will create new educational and career training opportunities for area residents and beyond.

MDC’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Offers Free Help to Low-Income Residents
Miami Dade College (MDC) is continuing its long-standing commitment to help low-income, elderly, and non-English speaking residents complete their 2009 taxes with the “always free” Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). The VITA program is administered and staffed by faculty and MDC business students who volunteer their time to help the public in preparing their tax forms. Students are trained beforehand and must pass an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) exam of basic rules, regulations, and tax preparation skills before they assist taxpayers. Divided into three groups, their functions are administrative, tax return preparation, and quality review.

FCLA to Offer Spring Creative Writing Courses Beginning February 1
Learn to craft science fiction, write a poem or a novel this spring with the help of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts’ Creative Writing Courses, taught by talented writer/teachers with stellar publication records and classroom experience. An acclaimed program of Miami Dade College (MDC), the Center will offer the courses from Feb. 1 through March 27. All classes will be held at MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The Center will also offer the Writers Institute, four-days of intensive writing workshops with nationally-acclaimed authors being held May 5-8, 2010.

MDC Wolfson Campus Hosting StoryCorps Historias Listening Event on Jan. 14
This month, StoryCorps Historias arrived at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus. As part of the project, it will present a unique listening event and slide show presentation on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. at the Upper Plaza on Building 1 (near the fountain).
