Journey from Africa is a Multifaceted Lesson in Goodwill and Western Science
Often times in business, partnerships form the most powerful alliances and produce very lucrative results. In education, partnerships are no different because the results produce the best and brightest students who can make a difference in the world. One such example is Miami Dade College’s (MDC) recent collaboration with the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and the University of Miami, to offer 12 students from Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, the chance to learn new techniques that will equip them with the skills to deal with the HIV/AIDS epidemic in their homeland.

MDC’s State Champion Women’s Volleyball Team Makes Move for National Title in Iowa This Week
A string of recent championship wins has inspired the Miami Dade College Women’s Volleyball team to make a move for the national title in Iowa this week. Having already captured the 2008 Southern Conference Championships, the Atlantic District Championship and the Florida State Championship, the Lady Sharks will attempt to add another jewel to their championships crown during the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa, beginning today through Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008.

Miami International Film Festival Accepting Submissions for its Florida Focus Short Film Competition
The Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), presented by Miami Dade College (MDC), recently announced its first Florida-based film competition. Festival organizers will begin accepting submissions for the Florida Focus Short Film Competition beginning Nov. 1 until Dec. 19, 2008. Winners will be announced during the 26th Annual Miami International Film Festival being held March 6-15, 2009. The competition is open to amateurs as well as professionals and includes two specific categories – Miami Minis Shorts and Student Social Shorts.

NBA Star Al Jefferson Donates $25,000 to MDC’s North Campus
During a meeting of the college’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Miami Dade College (MDC) Foundation was presented with a $25,000 check from Minnesota Timberwolves Center-Forward Al R. Jefferson to establish a scholarship endowment at the North Campus, in honor of his late father. Jefferson, who’s been in the NBA four seasons, is the nephew of Teddie Laing, chairperson of the North Campus School of Business who presented the check on his behalf.

First Graduates Complete FPL/MDC Electrical Power Technology Professional Training Pipeline Program, Offered Jobs
The first graduating class of the trailblazing Professional Training Pipeline program, a partnership between Florida Power & Light (FPL) and Miami Dade College (MDC), includes 12 students and they will all receive job offers from FPL with salaries averaging $50,000. The Miami-Dade County League of Cities recently awarded three scholarships to Miami Dade College (MDC) students. Rose-Taina Honorat, Gershom Jones and Christian Moreno were nominated by MDC faculty to receive the League of Cities scholarships, a program now in its second year. The family of esteemed sculptor, the late Rose Alterman, has donated one of her most magnificent pieces, The Philosopher, to Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus. At a special unveiling ceremony held yesterday at the North Campus, the son of Mrs. Alterman thanked the college’s administration and gift committee for accepting his mother’s sculpture, and reflected on the connection between the artwork’s new home and his family’s long history with the campus.
